The Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites
Los Angeles, California

Institute Goals

The goals of the Institute are to build leadership and management skills among current and future leaders in General Internal Medicine, as well as to communicate and inform chiefs of emerging critical challenges and solutions to meeting their mission and leadership roles

Who Should Attend

This meeting is designed and implemented to meet the educational and professional needs of Chiefs who face the growing complexity in managing Departments or Sections of General Internal Medicine.   It offers an unparalleled opportunity to network with the community of scholars devoted to GIM.  Chiefs from other IM sections, administrators and anyone with a leadership role within GIM divisions are also encouraged to participate.  We look forward to welcoming you to this community.

Featured Speakers include:
Jack Silversin, a highly regarded consultant on leading and managing change in health care will be joined by Deborah Borda, the chief executive of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hollywood Bowl. Both will share their experiences and insights on leading change. Deborah will describe the key role leadership played in the turnaround of her organization at a time when symphony orchestras are seeking to build audience and remain relevant to a new generation. According the New York Times, The Los Angles Philharmonic currently “tops the list of America’s premier orchestras.” The transformation that is earning the organization high praise and accolades will be described. Jack will share a framework for developing the capacity to execute change in medical organizations and will help the group draw parallels between reinvigorating the symphony experience and repositioning GIM to thrive by meeting current and future imperatives.

The session will be interactive.  Session objectives include:

  • To provide a framework that can be applied to build change capacity in Academic departments of General Internal Medicine

  • To define qualities of leadership critical for leading a profession in midst of profound change

  • To identify how to build and leverage the talents of an executive team to lead change

At the conclusion of the session, participants are invited to join Deborah to tour the unique, Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall.
