Who Should Attend

The Institute is designed as a resource for Division Chiefs, Hospitalist Directors, Associate Chiefs, Section Heads, Administrators, and other leaders in Divisions of GIM. Leaders are encouraged to attend, actively participate, and consider bringing along a colleague from their Institution who would benefit from attendance and leadership development.  It offers an unparalleled opportunity to network with the community of scholars devoted to GIM.  Chiefs from other IM sections, administrators and anyone with a leadership role within GIM divisions are also encouraged to participate.  We look forward to welcoming you to this community. 

Institute Goals

The goals of the Institute are to build leadership and management skills among current and future leaders in General Internal Medicine, as well as to communicate and inform chiefs of emerging critical challenges and solutions to meeting their mission and leadership roles.  

Keynote Speaker:

Dr. Jason Hwang - Leading through Innovation in times of Change
8:00am - 12:00pm

As Health Care reform becomes a reality, chiefs and leaders in general medicine are increasingly called upon to think boldly about the care, education, and research of patients with complex medical illness. New and innovative strategies will be necessary. The ACLGIM Leon Hess Management Training and Leadership Institute is pleased to present Dr. Jason Hwang as our keynote speaker for our 2011 annual meeting. Dr. Hwang is an internal medicine physician and co-founder of Innosight Institute, a nonprofit think tank focused on healthcare and innovation. He is the co-author of the bestselling book, "The Innovator's Prescription: A Disruptive Solutions of health Care" (McGraw-Hill, January 2009). Successful and proposed innovations such as Accountable Care Organizations and the development of new medical school training programs will be discussed.

1:45pm - 2:45pm Valerie Weber, MD, MS - Innovations in Education


Valerie Weber, MD, FACP, has joined The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) as Founding Chair of Medicine. In this leadership role, she oversees the development of education, research, practice models and community partnerships for the newly established Department of Medicine. She is leading the establishment of the development of the internal medicine department, including faculty recruitment and program/curriculum development. Her talk will focus on strategies about leading through innovation in the arena of Medical education. As a former GIM Division Chief, she brings a wealth of experience in organizational change in the educational setting.


3:00pm - 4:00pm Sarah H. Scholle, DrPH, MPH - Innovations in Research

Sarah Scholle, PhD is the vice President for Research for the National Committee for Quality Assurance. The NCQA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. Since its founding in 1990, NCQA has been a central figure in driving improvement throughout the health care system, helping to elevate the issue of health care quality to the top of the national agenda. Her talk will focus on the policy implications and newly developed concepts of Accountable Care Organizations. She will discuss both what we know and don't know about ACOs at this time, and in particular how ACOs relate to the Patient Centered Medical Home.


4:00-5:00 Alpesh N. Amin, MD, MBA - Innovations in Care Transitions
Alpesh Amin, MD, MBA is Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Executive Director of the Hospitalist Program at the University of California, Irvine. He has served as Chief of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Amin has been involved in projects involving care transitions, quality and safety in a team approach. Dr. Amin brings a wealth of experience in developing practice innovations across a continuum of care. He will focus on strategies and innovations in care transitions and will discuss metrics and outcome measures of success.
