WELCOME to the inaugural issue of ACGIMs Chiefs Alert.
This electronic newsletter will start as a monthly publication, but will expand if
necessary. The Editor, Bob Centor, encourages members to submit items for any of the
newsletters features, and volunteer to be associate editors. If there is a section

PRESIDENTS PERSPECTIVE - "What are you going to do when we're all in
there?"
As ACGIM approaches 100 chiefs in the fold, we know we can't rest on our laurels. Ben
Littenberg of Vermont asked, "What are you going to do when we're all in there?"
Here's the answer!
Chiefing is tough stuff, and a well-burnished exterior is seemingly one part of the job.
But the challenges are real, and the demands are sometimes endless. ACGIM has formed a
community of like-minded individuals to help each other face mutual challenges. To this
end, ACGIM is dedicated to providing forums for support, exchange of ideas, information-
sharing, and fostering development among GIM chiefs. For details of ACGIMs strategic

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES
CHIEF RESIDENT IMMERSION TRAINING PROGRAM IN ADDICTION MEDICINE: NIH/NIDA, will
fund travel, accommodations, registration, and materials for this program May 14-17th,
2003, in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to provide incoming Chief Residents with a scientific

PALLIATIVE CARE LEADERSHIP CENTERS: The Robert Wood Johnson Foundations
Center to Advance Palliative Care seeks proposals from established palliative care
programs to assist and support clinicians and managers of other health care institutions
in developing palliative care programs. November 27, 2002 is the deadline for letters of

UPCOMING ACGIM MEETINGS Bill Moran at Wake Forest is chairing the ACGIM
Meeting Committee. He is currently planning the 2003 Institute, which will take place
preceding the SGIM National Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia at the end of April,
2003. We will publish a preview of that Institute in the next Chiefs Alert.
